RNAV Validation – Enabling Process

The RNAV Validation Tool – RVT – is a desktop application, developed by DWI for EUROCONTROL, to help procedure designers in the ground validation of new or modified RNAV SIDs and STARs. Ground validation is a key step between the design and the implementation of RNAV procedures. The RNAV Validation Tool provides a user-friendly, costeffective method of ground validation with the capacity to input and update procedures, together with their supporting waypoints and navaids.

Validation and Flyability

The user inputs the procedure to be checked in an AIXM 5.1 compliant format and the RVT automatically checks path terminator sequences; appropriate path terminator use at start and end of the procedure; presence of necessary supporting data for the path terminator in use; input bearings and distances for each leg against those calculated using waypoint co-ordinates; the track angle change at each waypoint, to ensure it is within bounds; and the distances between the waypoints to ensure that they are not less than the required minimum. RVT includes a simulator for flyability tests. A range of Cat B, C and D transport aircraft are modelled and different meteorological conditions (wind and temperature) can also be selected.

3D Global View

The resulting trajectories can be displayed in both a 3D globe and profile view against the associated topography using integrated GIS capabilities. Multiple SIDs and STARs can be displayed simultaneously for comparison and demonstration.
